MOSCOW, May 24 (RIA Novosti) - A stash of heroin weighing several hundred kilograms was seized in a special operation conducted by anti-drugs police in Moscow, a police source said Thursday.
The source said that according to preliminary information the drugs came from Afghanistan, and were smuggled to Moscow in a truck.
"The exact weight of the seized drugs is not yet being specified, but it's nearly half a [metric] ton," the source said.
The operation has proved one of the most successful for Russia's anti-drugs police in recent times, and the seizure exceeds the 200 kg haul intercepted in 2005, he said. Some suspects have already been arrested in the ongoing case, he added.
Full details on the special operation will be released to the media on Friday, the anti-drugs service's press office said.
