MOSCOW, May 19 (RIA Novosti) - The Federal Security Service announced Saturday it had detained two suspects who planned an attempt to assassinate governor of St. Petersburg Valentina Matviyenko.

"The Federal Security Service and the Interior Ministry have prevented an assassination attempt on the governor of St. Petersburg, Valentina Matviyenko," the security agency said in a statement.

"In a course of a special operation on May 16, 2007, two crime suspects, both residents of the Leningrad Region, have been detained," the statement said.

"During the search, operatives seized two F-1 hand grenades and more than 500 grams of plastic explosives," it said.

FSB did not reveal the identities of the suspects citing the interests of the ongoing investigation.

The media disseminated reports late Friday claiming that St. Petersburg police detained a group of five unidentified individuals who planned to assassinate Matviyenko, elected governor in 2003.

"I cannot comment on this issue until the investigation into the case has been completed," Valentina Matviyenko said, adding that she was aware of the assassination attempt plans.

"I feel secure, and I have enough personal security officers to protect me," the governor said.

Matviyenko, 58, is considered a close supporter of Russian President Vladimir Putin and has been criticized by opponents and public for questionable city development policies and receiving financial support from dubious sources.
