WASHINGTON, April 21 (RIA Novosti) - Security will be tightened at a NASA space center in Texas after an armed man killed a hostage and himself in the building Friday, said Rex Geveden, associate administrator of NASA.

A man broke into the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston Friday, and took two people hostage. Police have established the name of the armed man as William Phillips of Jacobs Engineering Group, and the hostages as David Beverly and Fran Crenshaw. Witnesses said they heard from five to nine gunshots.

Police officer Dwayne Ready said Beverly was most likely shot immediately after Phillips took hostages. Police also said Phillips shot Beverly more than hours after he broke into the building.

Ready said the hostage-taker had tied up Crenshaw, reportedly an employee of MRI Technologies, with tape but she managed to free herself and ran safely away.

Three hours after he took the hostages, Phillips shot himself in the head. His colleagues have described him as a hothead.
