MOSCOW, March 19 (RIA Novosti) - A Moscow district court has sentenced a group of police officers to prison terms of two to seven years on charges of selling forged VIP license plates used by state officials, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported Monday.
They were also charged with large-scale fraud, document forgery, bribery, and complicity to commit crime.
Among other things, the Federal Security Service said, the group had produced, handled and sold such forged documents as special permits, Interior Ministry certificates, state license plates, special entrance passes to the Kremlin and the presidential administration, and entrance passes to central Moscow for large vehicles.
The investigation revealed that some documents were available for up to $200,000.
It was established that the criminals had been selling forged license plates through a network of mediators.
A Security Service spokesperson said 12 criminal cases had been launched and 20 people found criminally responsible.
