Russian fiscal watchdogs sign cooperation agreement

MOSCOW, March 14 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Federal Anti-Monopoly Service (FAS) and Federal Service for Fiscal and Budgetary Supervision have signed an agreement on cooperation in controlling the placement of state procurement orders, the FAS said Wednesday.

The agreement is aimed at developing a coordinated strategy to ensure the implementation of federal laws and the integration of information exchange resources in the sphere of state procurement.

"The implementation of the agreement will increase the effectiveness of controls exercised by the two executive bodies and will help to prevent, identify and correct violations related to the use of federal funds and non-budgetary resources in placement of procurement orders," the FAS statement said.

In line with the agreement, the agencies will exchange information on violation of fiscal policies during the placement of state procurement orders and ongoing criminal probes into suspected corruption cases.

Russia has recently stepped up the fight against corruption in the economic sector.

Russia's Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev highlighted on February 9 his ministry's success in tackling economic and financial crimes in Russia, which witnessed a series of high-profile corruption and money laundering cases in 2006.

The anti-corruption campaign has resulted in the instigation of about 600 bribery and embezzlement cases since July last year, when President Vladimir Putin set the fight against corruption as a national priority and ordered the new prosecutor general, Yury Chaika, to draw up an anti-corruption strategy.

First Deputy Prosecutor General Alexander Buksman said last November that corruption in Russia had reached an annual figure of $240 billion, a sum almost equal to the federal budget.
