MOSCOW, February 22 (RIA Novosti) - The Central Bank of Russia expects to adopt the ruble's new symbol later this year, a senior CBR official said Thursday.

"I believe we will see this work through to its logical conclusion before the end of the year," CBR First Deputy Chairman Georgy Luntovsky said.

Russia's lower house of parliament, the State Duma, adopted a law on the new ruble sign in the form of amendments to the Law on the Central Bank of Russia in May 2006, stipulating that the Central Bank will approve the ruble symbol.

Luntovsky said the CBR recently set up a special commission, including experts, MPs, and public figures, to prepare proposals for the ruble sign.

The symbol is widely expected to be based on the Russian letter 'P' ['R'].

The State Duma has already received over 100 proposals.
