Moscow commemorates victims of 2004 pool collapse

MOSCOW, February 14 (RIA Novosti) - Commemorative ceremonies were held in Moscow Wednesday to mark exactly three years since the roof of a water park in a southern neighborhood caved in, killing 28 and injuring more than a hundred.

At least 120 people gathered outside a chapel built at the site of the Transvaal Park to remember the victims of the tragedy, blamed on a flawed architectural design.

Last December, the Moscow City Court upheld an amnesty for architect Nodar Kancheli who designed the building, rejecting a protest from survivors. Charges against him were dropped in September under the terms of a parliamentary amnesty.

Kancheli, who maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings, was also questioned after another building he designed - Moscow's Basmanny market - collapsed in February 2006, killing at least 60 people.
