Russia opposes Myanmar debate at UN - Foreign Ministry

MOSCOW, January 12 (RIA Novosti) - Russia believes that discussing the situation in Myanmar, as proposed by the U.S., would be counterproductive, the Foreign Ministry said Friday.

Last December, the U.S. delegation drafted a UN resolution describing the situation in the Southeast Asian nation as jeopardizing peace and security in the region.

"Russia has from the outset been opposed to the Myanmar issue being submitted for consideration by the UN Security Council," the ministry said in a statement posted on its official Web site.

It said Russia's position was made known in September 2006 at a UN Security Council session.

"While not denying that there are problems in Myanmar, it is our view that the situation in the country does not pose a threat to international or regional peace," the statement said.
