Large oil depot in central Russia hit by fire

MOSCOW, December 31 (RIA Novosti) - A major fire broke out Sunday at a large oil storage depot in the Tver Region in central Russia, an emergencies ministry spokesperson said.

He said the fire started early Sunday at an oil depot located in the town of Severnaya Dvina, engulfing 11 storage tanks with gasoline.

"The fire broke out at about 10.40 a.m. Moscow time [7.40 a.m. GMT]," he said. "According to preliminary reports, 11 storage tanks with gasoline are on fire."

No fatalities or injuries have been reported, the spokesman said, adding that local residents are being evacuated from the area.

Teams of rescue workers and firefighting units are attempting to contain the blaze, the source said.
