The Institute of Social Studies said a survey taken December 5-12 in association with the Social Monitoring center shows that 58% of Ukrainians oppose President Viktor Yushchenko's bid to take the nation into the North Atlantic alliance, while only 24% support it.
Ukraine's potential integration into the European Union appears more popular with the public, with 52% in favor of the prospect and 29% against.
Some 2,280 Ukrainians aged above 18 were interviewed for the survey.
The issue of possible NATO and EU membership has proved a divisive one for Ukraine. Western-leaning Yushchenko has been trying to foster closer ties with the alliances since he came into power on the back of an "orange revolution" in 2004. But his efforts encounter strong resistance from pro-Moscow Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych and inhabitants of the country's mainly Russian-speaking eastern and southern regions.
