GROZNY, December 17 (RIA Novosti) - A suspected militant has been detained in the Republic of Chechnya in Russia's troubled North Caucasus region, the local law-enforcement bodies said Sunday.

The police of Russia's southern federal district detained a resident of Grozny suspected of fighting against federal troops from 1998 to 2006 as part of criminal gangs controlled by Chechnya's No. 1 terrorist Shamil Basayev and field commander Batayev, the law-enforcement bodies said.

Basayev, who claimed responsibility for the 2004 Beslan school massacre and other atrocities, was killed July 10.

Also, two residents of the village of Alkhan-Kala, suspected of supplying food to illegal armed formations between 2005 and 2006, turned themselves in to police, the law-enforcement bodies said.
