British Embassy in Moscow complains of youth movement picket

MOSCOW, December 11 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Foreign Ministry received Monday the British Embassy's complaint over a picket organized by a pro-Kremlin political youth movement.

It is not the first time the group Nashi (Ours) has set up a picket in front of the Embassy. In August, it demonstrated in front of the compound demanding an apology from Ambassador Tony Brenton for participating in the Different Russia conference in Moscow July 12.

Held by Russian opposition leaders ahead of the Group of Eight summit in St. Petersburg, the conference aimed to draw public attention to what organizers said was a clampdown by President Vladimir Putin's administration on democratic and economic freedoms in Russia.

Nashi leader Vasily Yakemenko told RIA Novosti earlier that the movement will continue obstructing Brenton's activities until he apologizes for attending the conference.

"We will not stop picketing," he said, adding that Brenton will either have to apologize or else leave the country.

The Foreign Ministry said the Embassy's complaint was forwarded to law enforcement agencies.

The Financial Times said earlier that the movement has been putting pressure on the diplomat for four months.

"It is deliberate psychological harassment, which is being carried out professionally and which borders on violence," the newspaper quoted Brenton as saying.
