PETROZAVODSK, December 4 (RIA Novosti) - Authorities in the Republic of Karelia in Russia's northwest said Monday that the families of victims of an interethnic brawl in the city of Kondopoga will receive compensation.

Kondopoga, in the Republic of Karelia, experienced a wave of racial violence in early September after two local residents were killed and five others injured in a restaurant brawl with Chechens August 30.

The incident sparked racially motivated violence in the community, and a wave of nationalist protests elsewhere in the country.

Under a resolution signed by Sergei Katanandov, head of the Republic of Karelia, the mothers of two locals killed in the brawl will receive 100,000 rubles (about $3,800) each, while five victims of the incident will get 25,000 rubles (about $950) each.

A total of 109 people were detained in the city on suspicion of involvement in pogroms and arson attacks, and 25 rioters were arrested. Seventeen criminal cases were opened following the incident.
