MOSCOW, December 4 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's top prosecution body is preparing an extradition request for a suspected Chechen militant arrested last week in Spain, the Russian Prosecutor General's Office said Monday.

Murat Gasayev, 32, accused of involvement in an armed formation that committed a number of crimes in Russia in 2003, was arrested December 1 by Spanish police in the country's eastern region of Valencia.

"The Prosecutor General's Office is preparing a request for Gasayev's extradition from Spain to bring him to criminal account for crimes committed in Russia," the top prosecution body said in a statement, adding that Gasayev was placed by Russia on the international wanted list September 27.

Spanish police have been taking active measures to detain Russian criminals hiding or operating on Spanish territory.

Last month, police began the second phase of a large-scale operation codenamed Operacion Avispa (Operation Hornet), targeting the Russian and Georgian mafias operating in the country.
