Former Soviet leader Gorbachev out of danger - aide

MOSCOW, November 27 (RIA Novosti) - Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, who underwent surgery in a Munich clinic to prevent a stroke last week, is out of danger and may be discharged Wednesday, his aide said Monday.

Gorbachev, 75, was admitted to the Grosshadern clinic with pre-stroke symptoms and had a surgical operation on his right internal carotid artery last Tuesday.

"It was obvious on the second day [after the surgery] that the operation was a success, and the patient is now recovering. Mikhail Sergeyevich will be discharged this week, on Wednesday as far as I know," Karen Karagezyan said.

The carotid arteries are responsible for carrying oxygenated blood to the brain. Cholesterol plaques can narrow or clog arteries, reducing blood flow, which can lead to a stroke.

Karagezyan said the German surgeons had applied the treatment method proposed by Russian doctors who had made a diagnosis. He said Gorbachev will spend several days in Germany after he is discharged.

The former Soviet leader, famous for his efforts to reshape East-West relations and for overseeing major liberal reforms, lost his wife Raisa to leukemia in 1999.

Gorbachev, who heads the Gorbachev Foundation, an independent socioeconomic and political think-tank, had organized and was expected to attend the seventh international conference of Nobel Peace Prize winners in Rome November 17. The meeting was to focus on nuclear technologies.

But the charismatic leader chose to follow his doctors' advice and canceled the trip to undergo a medical examination, a Foundation spokesman said earlier.
