MOSCOW, November 18 (RIA Novosti) - Chechen police have killed the former commander of the Gorets task force, declared outlawed by the North Caucasus republic's authorities, in central Moscow, the capital's prosecutors said Saturday.

"During a special operation to detain Movladi Baisarov, he tried to throw a grenade at policemen, fire [at him] was opened, and Baisarov was killed," the Moscow Prosecutor's Office said.

A law enforcement source said earlier Moscow anti-organized crime department officers assisted Chechen police in conducting the operation aimed to detain the suspected militant.

The Gorets task force was disbanded by Chechnya's authorities, part of its officers were offered to serve in the republic's law enforcement system in September, but some officers, led by Baisarov, refused to lay down arms.

Chechen prosecutors suspected Baisarov of involvement in abductions and murders.

On November 15, the Chechen prime minister's press service said thirty-three former Gorets officers laid down their arms and surrendered to authorities, but Baisarov was still on the run.

The full-scale military offensive in Chechnya ended in 2000, when federal troops took control of the capital, Grozny. But militants continued their resistance in Chechnya for several years, and have also carried out bloody terrorist attacks and hostage-takings in other Russian regions.
