GROZNY, November 11 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Chechnya may have come a step closer to the rule of law as a newly-formed constitutional court held its first session in the troubled republic Saturday.

"The Constitutional Court has begun performing its duties in full measure today," Acting Chair Sheikh-Ahmed Abdurakhmanov told RIA Novosti.

"The constitutional court's activities in the Chechen republic will help enhance the rule of law and improve the system of protection of human and civil rights," he said.

The Chechen legislature has so far confirmed four nominees to the five-member panel, with the position of presiding judge still open.

"The constitutional court is facing a large amount of work to bring local laws and regulations in line with the Constitution of the Russian Federation," Abdurakhmanov said.
