MOSCOW, October 19 (RIA Novosti) - Russian industrial holding Basic Element (BasEl) denied Thursday rumors that its owner has acquired a stake in General Motors, the world's leading carmaker.

German-based Manager Magazine earlier reported that Oleg Deripaska, one of Russia's richest men, is seeking to secure at least 10% of the U.S. carmaker's shares.

"The information divulged by Manager Magazine suggesting that Oleg Deripaska has acquired General Motors shares does not correspond to reality," a BasEl official said.

Deripaska was ranked the world's 62nd richest man by Forbes Magazine in 2006, with estimated wealth of $7.2 billion. As well as BasEl, he controls Russian Aluminum (RusAl), one of the world's largest aluminum producers. He also a vice-president of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs and a member of the government council on competitiveness and entrepreneurship.

BasEl holds combined assets of over $13 billion in energy, machinery, natural resources, financial services, and construction.
