Abkhaz president hails adoption of UN resolution on Georgia

SUKHUMI, October 13 (RIA Novosti) - The president of the Georgia's self-proclaimed republic of Abkhazia hailed Friday the UN Security Council's adoption of a Russia-proposed resolution on Georgia.

The resolution urged Georgia to refrain from provocative actions in the Kodori Gorge and extended the mandate of Russian peacekeepers in Abkhazia until April 15, 2007.

"Finally Abkhazia gets a just UN Security Council resolution, and we are satisfied that the UN Security Council has realistically evaluated the current situation in the upper part of the Kodori Gorge, and denounced Georgia's destabilizing role in this situation," President Sergei Bagapsh said.

The Kodori Gorge in northern Georgia, controlled by Abkhazia in its lower section and Tbilisi in the upper part, has been at the center of tensions between the former Soviet republic and the breakaway region since late July, when Georgia conducted what it called a police operation there to disarm a rebellious militia leader.

Russia has insisted on the withdrawal of Georgian troops from Kodori, saying it is crucial for the revival of talks with Abkhazia. The self-proclaimed republic said in September the operation was obstructing peace efforts that had been ongoing since 1993, and was delaying negotiations.

Bagapsh also said Abkhazia was satisfied with the extension of the Russian peacekeepers' mandate in the breakaway republic until April 15, 2007, and added that Russian peacekeepers were the guarantors of the peace in the region.

The bloody conflict between Georgia and Abkhazia erupted in the early 1990s following the collapse of the Soviet Union. It was suspended following a ceasefire agreement that introduced peacekeeping troops from the former Soviet republics, including Russia, into the separatist area. A UN observer mission has operated in the region since 1993.
