* At the World Weightlifting Championship in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (through October 7):

- Nadezhda Evstyukhina won silver in the women's 75kg category with a total of 267kg (122kg in the snatch and 145kg in the clean and jerk), and her teammate Zarema Kasaeva took bronze with 246kg (110 + 136). Lei Cao (China) won gold with 268kg (118 + 150).

- Aslambek Ediyev won silver in the men's 85kg category with a total of 373kg (172kg in the snatch and 201kg in the clean and jerk). Andrei Rybakov (Belarus) won gold with 383kg (180 + 203) and Tigran Martirosyan (Armenia) took bronze with 370kg (172 + 198)
