BERLIN, September 28 (RIA Novosti) - Germany's foreign minister met Thursday in Berlin with Iran's top nuclear negotiator for talks, at the request of the European Union's foreign policy chief, the ministry said.

The meeting between Germany's Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Ali Larijani followed long discussions between the Iran nuclear chief and the EU's Javier Solana on Tehran's controversial nuclear program.

"Javier Solana, who has been in Berlin for two days for talks on regulating the 'Iran problem' with Ali Larijani, asked the German foreign minister to also meet with Tehran's representative," the German Foreign Ministry said.

Solana and Larijani spoke for more than five hours on Wednesday, and continued discussions Thursday, in the latest attempt to broker a deal on a package of incentives being offered by the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany to persuade Tehran to suspend uranium enrichment and return to full negotiations.

The U.S. and other UN Security Council members have pushed for sanctions against Iran over fears that it is pursuing a nuclear weapons program, but have met with resistance from veto-holding members Russia and China.

Radio France Internationale earlier quoted Solana as saying his talks with the Iranian official had produced positive results.
