KIEV, September 19 (RIA Novosti) - A total of 25 people have died and at least another 135 have fallen ill this month after eating wild mushrooms in Ukraine, a Health Ministry official said Tuesday.

The source said most of the poisoning cases had been registered in Kiev and the surrounding region, as well as in western provinces such as Lviv and Volyn. He also said many of the victims could have been saved if they had asked for medical aid as soon as they felt unwell.

Mushroom picking is a traditional pastime in early fall in the former Soviet Union and fatalities have been recorded elsewhere.

In Russia's Kursk Region, near the border with Ukraine, at least three people have died after eating wild mushrooms and 42 people, including three children, have fallen ill.

Regional health officials said Friday that most of those affected in Kursk had either failed to cook edible mushrooms properly or had eaten poisonous varieties.
