KIEV, September 5 (RIA Novosti) - Three children have drowned in western Ukraine, bringing the figure for child deaths from drowning to 278 since the beginning of the year, Ukraine's emergencies ministry said Tuesday.

A total of 1,872 people, including 278 children, drowned in Ukraine this year, according to the ministry.

"Three children aged 5, 8 and 12 drowned yesterday while rafting in a local pond," the ministry said, adding that the incident took place in the village of Vylok, in Ukraine's Zakarpattya region, bordering on Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania across the Carpathian Mountains.
