MOSCOW, August 30 (RIA Novosti) - Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Saltanov will represent Russia at an international donors' conference in Stockholm Thursday to raise funds for war-torn Lebanon, the ministry said Wednesday.

Representatives of around 60 countries and organizations are invited to the Swedish capital for the conference, which organizers hope will raise substantial amounts of aid for shelter and the reconstruction of the country's crippled infrastructure and social services.

A second conference will be held September 1 on humanitarian aid for the Palestinian territories.

Saltanov "will represent Russia at both conferences, where he will present Russia's position on the issues under consideration," the Foreign Ministry said.

The conferences are being organized jointly with the United Nations and the Lebanese government.

Israel's military operation in Lebanon began July 12 after the radical group Hizbollah killed three Israeli servicemen and captured two others in a cross-border raid. In its air raids, the Israeli military destroyed roads, bridges, an airport, and numerous residential buildings.

Around 1,000 Lebanese civilians were killed, and a quarter of the country's population was made homeless. From the earliest stages of the conflict, Russia condemned Israel's actions as disproportionate and called for a ceasefire.
