* At the IAAF World Athletics Junior Championship in Beijing, China (ended August 20):

- Tatyana Chernova won gold in the heptathlon with 6,227points. Her teammate Yana Panteleyeva took bronze with 5,979 points and Ida Marcussen (Norway) took silver with 6,020 points.

- Yevgeny Aydamirov won gold in the men's hammer throw with 78.42 meters.

- Russia won silver in the 4x400m men's relay in 3m05.13s. The United States won gold in 3m03.76s and Great Britain finished third in 3m05.49s

- Tatyana Shemyakina won silver in the 10,000m women's race walk in 45m34.41s. Hong Liu (China) won gold in 45m12.84s and Anamaria Greceanu (Romania) took bronze in 46m45.67s

- Leonid Kivalov won bronze in the men's pole vault with 5.42 meters. German Chiaraviglio (Argentina) won gold with 5.71m and Yansheng Yang (China) took silver with 5.54m

* At the European basketball under-16 men's championship in Spain (ended August 20):

- Russia took silver, failing to retain a 87-84 lead in the final against Spain with just two seconds to go and losing 106-110 after the two overtime sessions. Serbia & Montenegro took bronze, beating Croatia 85:69 in the third-place match

* Russia's national water polo junior women's team won the title at the European championships in Kirishi (Russia), beating the Netherlands 13-7 in the final. Hungary won bronze, beating Italy 12-11 in the third place match

* At the $1,340,000 Rogers Cup WTA tennis tournament in Montreal, Canada (the finals have been postponed until August 21 due to rain):

Doubles:

- Nadezhda Petrova and Martina Navratilova advanced to the final, beating Marion Bartoli, (France) and Shahar Peer (Israel) 6-3, 6-3

- Dinara Safina and Katarina Srebotnik (Slovenia) lost to No.2-seed duo Cara Black (Zimbabwe) and Anna-Lena Groenefeld (Germany) in the semifinals

Singles:

- Anna Chakvetadze failed to advance to the final after she retired in the second set against Martina Hingis (Switzerland) due to injury

- No.9-seed Safina lost to No.13-seed Ana Ivanovic (Serbia & Montenegro) 1-6, 4-6 in the semifinals

* Russia's national men's volleyball team lost to Italy 0-3 Saturday and 2-3 Sunday in the two home matches in Group C of the FIVB World League 2006 tournament.
