DUSHANBE, August 9 (RIA Novosti) - Said Abdullo Nuri, the leader of Tajikistan's opposition Party of Islamic Revival, has died at the age of 60, the party's political council said Wednesday.

Nuri headed the party in 1993 when it was a part of the united Tajik opposition fighting against the People's Front during the civil war of 1992-1997.

In June 1997, Nuri and Tajik President Emomali Rakhmonov signed a peace agreement that put an end to the civil war in the Central Asian republic.

From July 1997 to March 2000, Nuri headed the commission for national reconciliation that was formed to implement the peace agreement. It was dissolved after completing its work.

The Party of Islamic Revival, Tajikistan's third largest party, comprises 25,000 members and is the only Islamic party with official registration in the Commonwealth of Independent States.
