* At the 49th ISSF World Shooting Championships in Zagreb, Croatia (through August 5):

- Erdzhanik Avetisyan won the gold medal in the women's skeet competition with 71 points, beating silver medalist Cainero Chiara (Italy) and Bartekova Danka (Slovakia), both with 71 points, on extra shots

- Albina Shakirova and Angelina Mishchuk won silver and bronze in the junior women's skeet competition with 68 points and 67 points, respectively. Emily Blount (U.S.) won the gold medal with 71 points

- Russia won silver in the 50m running target mixed men's team competition with 1,165 points, losing to Ukraine on fast run shots. Sweden took bronze with 1,164 points

- Russia won silver in the 50m running target mixed junior men's team competition with 1,151 points. North Korea won gold with 1,156 points and Poland finished third with 1,150 points

* At the 28th European Swimming Championships in Budapest, Hungary (through August 6):

- Arkady Vyatchanin set a European record of 1m 55.44s to win the gold medal in the 200m backstroke men's competition. Laszlo Cseh (Hungary) took silver in 1m 56.69s and Razvan Florea (Romania) took silver in 1m 57.83s

- Yury Prilukov won the gold in the 1,500m men's freestyle in 14m 51.93s. Sebastien Rouault (France) took silver in 14m 55.73s and Nicolas Rostoucher (France) finished third in 15m 01.82s

- Yelena Bogomazova won the gold in the 50m women's breaststroke in 31.69s. Kate Haywood (U.K.) took silver in 31.71s and Agnes Kovacs (Hungary) finished third in 31.95s

- Russia won gold in the 4x100m medley men's relay in 3m 34.96s. Ukraine took silver in 3m 36.21s and the U.K. took bronze in 3m 36.61s

- Dmitry Dobroskok and Gleb Galperin won gold in the 10m platform synchronized men's diving competition with 469.38 points. Sascha Klein and Heiko Meyer (Germany) took silver with 447.96 points and Italy's duo Benedetti Michele and Francesco Dell'Uomo took bronze with 435.12 points
