Abkhazia said Georgia had already deployed over 2,000 soldiers, two light armored prime movers, two Mi-8 helicopters, four Mi-24 helicopters and possibly one U.S.-made Iroquois (UH-1 Huey) helicopter in the upper part of the Kodori Gorge.
"Despite Abkhazia's repeated calls against violating agreements reached at talks and on the withdrawal of military detachments from the upper part of the Kodori Gorge, Georgia continues to increase its military presence," the Abkhazian authorities said in a document addressed to the United Nations, Russia, the Group of Friends of the UN Secretary General, and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
Georgia started what it termed an anticrime operation in the region last week to find and disarm a rebellious militia unit led by Emzar Kvitsiani, a former Georgian presidential envoy to Abkhazia.
The operation began after Kvitsiani said on July 23 he did not recognize Tbilisi's rule. He said Georgian troops were moving into the area to disarm former members of his Hunter border guard battalion, which was formally disbanded in 2005, although most members refused to lay down their arms.
The breakaway republic of Abkhazia declared independence in 1992, which led to a conflict with Georgia that ended with a ceasefire two years later. Thousands died during the fighting.
