* At the 49th ISSF World Shooting Championships in Zagreb, Croatia (through August 5):

- Russia won the gold medal in the 10m running target mixed junior women's team competition with 1,105 points. Germany took silver with 1,074 points, and Ukraine took bronze with 1,071 points

- Russia won gold in the 25m standard pistol junior men's team competition with 1,651 points. France took silver with 1,645 points, and Thailand finished third with 1,588 points

- Russia won the silver medal in the 25m standard pistol men's team competition with 1,711 points. China won gold with 1,715 points, and Ukraine finished third with 1,706 points

- Oksana Danilenko won the silver medal in the 10m running target mixed junior women's team competition with 370 points, beating compatriot Olga Stepanova on extra shots. Both Russians finished one point behind gold medalist Bianka Keczeli (Hungary)

* At the 28th European Swimming Championships in Budapest, Hungary (through August 6):

- Yekaterina Seliverstova won the gold medal in the 5km open water swimming in 2h01m50.8s. Larisa Ilchenko and Jana Pechanova (Czech Republic) shared third place (2h01m52.4s), just 0.1 second behind silver medalist Cathi Dietrich (France).

* At the $820,000 Generali Open ATP tennis tournament in Kitzbuehel, Austria (through July 30):

- Top-seed Nikolai Davydenko failed to advance to the third round, losing to unseeded Nicolas Lapentti (Ecuador) 3-6, 3-6
