Moldovan leader says his country to stay in CIS

MOSCOW, July 21 (RIA Novosti) - Moldova's president said Friday at an informal summit of former Soviet republics in Moscow that his country had no intention of pulling out of the CIS.

Two weeks ago, the parliamentary opposition in Moldova raised the issue of the country's withdrawal from the Commonwealth of Independent States, a loose union of 11 former Soviet republics, but the question was never put to vote.

"Moldova is not going to quit the CIS, and this issue is off the agenda," Vladimir Voronin told the Ekho Moskvy radio station.

The Moldovan leadership is certain the CIS must exist, he said.

Two other former Soviet republics, Georgia and Ukraine, signaled reluctance in May to remain members of the CIS after West-leaning governments came to power in these ex-Communist republics.

Presidents of Georgia, Ukraine and Armenia Mikheil Saakashvili, Viktor Yushchenko and Robert Kocharyan said Friday they would not be attending the informal CIS summit in Moscow.

Voronin also said the conflict in Moldova's breakaway region of Transdnestr could be resolved before 2008.

Transdnestr with predominantly Russian-speaking population proclaimed independence in the early 1990s following the collapse of the Soviet Union.

"There are all prerequisites and opportunities for this," the Moldovan leader said, adding that resolution only required political will from the parties.

Voronin also reiterated his country's commitment to peaceful resolution of the conflict.
