MOSCOW, July 20 (RIA Novosti) - Russia is ready to send humanitarian aid to Lebanon, and has asked Beirut to specify the country's immediate needs, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said Thursday.

A humanitarian crisis has emerged in Lebanon, with hundreds of fatalities following Israeli attacks, and hundreds of thousands forced to flee, in a conflict sparked by the capture of Israeli soldiers. Russia has branded Israel's response hugely disproportionate.

Alexander Yakovenko said, "We have asked Lebanon what the country's current needs are, and expect a response in the near future."

He said Russia would also consider the UN's humanitarian appeal.

"The humanitarian situation [in Lebanon] is very harsh," he said, adding that Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Saltanov was currently in talks with Middle East leaders on means to resolve the crisis.

Israel has carried out bombings and air strikes in Lebanon, and sent its troops into the country, in a wave of violence that began nine days ago when Islamic militant group Hizbollah captured two Israeli servicemen in a cross-border raid. Israel's attacks have left around 300 Lebanese dead and displaced 500,000, according to the Lebanese prime minister. At least 29 Israelis have also lost their lives.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said earlier that an immediate ceasefire was the first urgent step needed to end the escalating violence.
