Russia to head anti-conflict measures around world - G8 request

STRELNA (near St. Petersburg), July 16 (RIA Novosti) - Russia will organize and head consultations on measures against conflicts and peacekeeping operations around the world at a G8 request, G8 leaders said in a declaration Sunday.

"We asked the Russian presidency to organize and lead consultations on this issue," the leaders said in the G8 Declaration on Cooperation and Future Action in Stabilization and Reconstruction.

"G8 experts will invite representatives from the UN and appropriate regional organizations from a range of disciplines (development, security and diplomacy) to meet as soon as possible in 2006 after the conclusion of the UN General Assembly to discuss feasibility of implementation of the following measures," the statement said.

The statement set out work to be conducted in: Peace Support Operations, Conflict Prevention, Coordination, Awareness of Capabilities or Gaps, Pre-positioning Resources, Strengthening Regional Organizations and Interoperability.

The leaders of Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, France, Germany, Canada and Japan are in Strelna, near St. Petersburg, for Russia's debut G8 summit. The event will conclude after three days on Monday.
