Georgia has no plans to deploy troops in S.Ossetia - president

TBILISI, July 11 (RIA Novosti) - Georgia is not planning to deploy troops to the breakaway region of South Ossetia to resolve the long-running conflict, President Mikheil Saakashvili said Tuesday.

He denied reports that Georgia's troops that were currently involved in an exercise could be deployed in South Ossetia as the country's key goal was to achieve economic growth, rather than to launch military operations in its regions.

"Any major attempt to destabilize the situation in the country and provoke disorders in any of Georgia's regions will be suppressed," Saakashvili said.

Georgia's president has sought to return the region to the fold of the country after South Ossetia proclaimed independence in 1990 and fighting broke out. Russia has had peacekeepers stationed in the conflict zone to maintain a ceasefire since 1992.
