DUSHANBE, July 7 (RIA Novosti) - Tajik President Emomali Rakhmonov and Prince Andrew discussed Friday the status and prospects of Tajik-British relations.

"Cooperation with European countries is a foreign policy priority for Tajikistan, and closer contacts with such a developed state as Great Britain is in our interests," Rakhmonov said at a meeting with Prince Andrew, the duke of York, who is on a two-day official visit to the republic.

The dignitaries said relations between the United Kingdom and the Central Asian state were satisfactory, citing the operations of such U.K. non-governmental organizations in Tajikistan as Save the Children, START, and Merlin, as well as the Zarafshon Gold Tajik-British joint gold-producing venture.

Prince Andrew said he was very pleased with his visit to Tajikistan and would like to learn more about the country.

The two sides said there was good potential for cooperation in the economic sphere, fighting terrorism and extremism, and countering other threats and challenges.

They expressed readiness to develop cooperation in protecting Tajikistan's border with Afghanistan and combating drug trafficking.

On Sunday, Prince Andrew will travel to Mongolia.
