MOSCOW, July 5 (RIA Novosti) - Syria's chief Muslim cleric on Wednesday invited the head of the Russian Orthodox Church to visit the Arab country.

Grand Mufti Sheikh Ahmed Badr-Eddine Hassoun met with Patriarch Alexy II on the sidelines of an international religious summit in Moscow to discuss the relations between the two nations as well as Muslim-Christian dialogue, said Vsevolod Chaplin, deputy head of the Moscow Patriarchate's external church relations department.

Alexy II said that in Russia, Orthodox Christians and Muslims had coexisted in harmony for centuries and that they could serve as a role model for other nations.

Hassoun expressed his support for Orthodox Christian communities across the world and condemned the recent killing of Russian diplomats in Iraq.

Most Syrians are Sunni Muslims, but the country also has a sizable Christian community, making up about 10% of the 18 million population.
