MOSCOW, July 3 (RIA Novosti) - German automaker Volkswagen increased sales in Russia by 57% year-on-year in January-June to 9,389, the company said Monday.

It sold 8,033 cars and 1,356 light trucks in the period this year compared with 5,125 and 856 in 2005, respectively.

Last month, the Trade and Economic Development ministry signed a deal with Volkswagen AG on opening a car plant in Russia.

The German automaker will build a $510 million 115,000-vehicle plant in Kaluga, southwest of Moscow, to assemble its Polo, Passat and Touareg models, as well as the Skoda Octavia.
