Women's singles:

- Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova (5) failed to advance to the next round, losing to Na Li (27) from China 6-3, 2-6, 3-6

Men's singles:

- Russia's Mikhail Yuzhny failed to advance to the next round, losing to Novak Djokovic from Serbia and Montenegro 6-4, 2-6, 3-6, 3-6

Women's doubles:

- Russia's Yelena Likhovtseva and Anastasia Myskina advanced to the second round by defeating Selima Sfar from Tunisia and Jasmin Woehr from Germany 6-3, 6-4

* CSKA Moscow soccer club midfielder Daniel Carvalho won a trial against Zhizn newspaper, which earlier published an article accusing him of rape. The Basmanny Court of Moscow ruled to fine the newspaper 175,000 rubles ($6,463)

* Russia's women's track and field team won 2006 Spar European Cup in Malaga, Spain

* The Russian parliament's lower house approved a law on "sports passports" for athletes in Russia

* Lithuania's Antanas Sireika became the head coach of Russia's Kazan Uniks basketball club after previous coach Stanislav Yeryomin stepped down from the post to become the general manager of the team
