* At the 2006 Wimbledon Grand Slam series tennis tournament, which runs June 26 to July 9:

Women's singles:

- Russia's Maria Sharapova (4) advanced to the second round after defeating Anna Smashnova from Israel 6-2, 6-0

- Russia's Anastasia Myskina (9) advanced to the second round after defeating Cara Black from Zimbabwe 6-0, 6-4

- Russia's Yaroslava Shvedova failed to advance to the second round after she withdrew in the first set due to an injury. She was leading Lisa Raymond from the United States 5-3

Men's singles:

- Russia's Dmitry Tursunov (27) advanced to the second round after defeating Danai Udomchoke from Thailand 6-1, 6-4, 6-2

- Russia's Nikolai Davydenko (9) failed to advance to the second round after losing to Alejandro Falla from Colombia 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-7 (8-10), 3-6

* The International Youth Chess Tournament will start on June 30 in Armenian resort city of Dzhermuk. Fifty players, age 8-18, from Armenia, Russia and Iran will take part in the tournament

* Head Coach of Kazan Uniks basketball club Stanislav Yeryomin stepped down from his post and will now become general manager
