Russia's finance minister against sliding income tax scale

MOSCOW, June 22 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's finance minister said Thursday he was against an idea to reestablish a sliding scale for income tax in the foreseeable future.

Russia set a flat-rate of 13% for income tax in 2001, but Audit Chamber head Sergei Stepashin said on Wednesday that a sliding scale for income tax could be re-established in the country in 2008-2009, adding it was common practice in many countries.

However, Alexei Kudrin said, "A progressive tax scheme in Russia would not work for long - I am against a progressive scale for levying income tax."

The minister said: "For the time being, the existing system [for income tax] provides greater growth."

He also added that a sliding tax scale was not a matter for the foreseeable future.
