MOSCOW, June 21 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's top auditor said Wednesday that a sliding scale for income tax could be re-established in the country in 2008-2009.

Russia set a flat-rate 13% for income tax in 2001, but Audit Chamber head Sergei Stepashin refused to rule out a return to a sliding scale, saying it was common practice in many countries.

"This is global practice, the more you earn the more taxes you pay," he said.

Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin and Economic Development and Trade Minister German Gref have similarly suggested that Russia might return to a sliding scale in the long term.
