* The finance ministers from the Group of Eight leading industrialized nations met in St. Petersburg and discussed economic issues in advance of the G8 summit, focusing on energy security, and tackling poverty and terrorist financing

* Russian Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin said after the G8 finance ministers' meeting:

- Russia has intensified its efforts towards full integration into the Group of Eight, including gaining an equal role in the group's financial discussions

- The proposal by the Russian Industry and Energy Ministry and electricity monopoly Unified Energy System (UES) to increase the government's stakes in power grid companies is justified

- Mechanisms have not yet been considered for taxing Russian energy giant Gazprom's superprofits

- Russia backs the principles of the Energy Charter but is concerned that certain important provisions are lacking in the document

- Russia and Germany will reach a final agreement on the early repayment of a part of Russia's Soviet-era debt to the Paris Club of Creditor Nations within the next two weeks

- Iran should be integrated into the international system of combating money laundering and terrorism financing

- Russia will announce a second tranche of repayment of Soviet-era commercial debt in one month's time

- One of Russia's initiatives during the country's presidency of the G8 is to improve the level of the population's financial literacy

* U.S. Treasury Secretary John Snow said after the G8 finance ministers' meeting:

- Russia could join the World Trade Organization before the G8 summit scheduled for mid-July but there is still work to be carried in order for Russia to join

- Russia is a reliable supplier of natural gas

- Washington has not changed its position on the Iran nuclear issue

* Tatyana Mokridi, a spokesman for the Our Ukraine pro-presidential party, said the latest round of talks between leaders of a mooted "orange coalition" in the new Ukrainian parliament had failed to produce any results

* The Kazakh industry and commerce minister said 22 out of 38 documents for a basic set of agreements on establishing a Common Economic Space (CES) in four former Soviet republics had been prepared

* Russian liberal party Yabloko does not intend to team up with the Union of Right Forces (SPS) or any other right-leaning movements at the 2007 parliamentary election, a party deputy chairman said

* The Russian Foreign Ministry said it was shocked by comments from the United States ambassador to the United Nations, John Bolton, who accused the Russian leadership of being split over the Iranian nuclear issue
