* Russian heavyweight boxer Nikolai Valuyev, successfully defended his WBA title in Hanover, Germany, defeating challenger Owen Beck (Jamaica) by a 3rd round technical knockout

* At the $18.2-mln Roland Garros Grand Slam series tennis tournament in Paris, France (through June 11):

Women's singles:

- Dinara Safina, seeded No. 14 for the tournament, advanced to the quarterfinals by beating compatriot Maria Sharapova (4) 7-5, 2-6, 7-5 with a shock comeback from 1-5 down in the third set

- Svetlana Kuznetsova (8) advanced to the quarterfinals by beating Francesca Schiavone (9) 1-6, 6-4, 6-4

- Anastasia Myskina (10) failed to advance to the quarterfinals, losing to fifth-seeded Justine Henin-Hardenne (Belgium) 1-6, 4-6

- Yelena Dementyeva (6) lost to Shahar Peer (31, Israel) 4-6, 5-7 in the third round

Women's doubles:

- No.9-seed duo Yelena Dementyeva and Flavia Pennetta (Italy) failed to advance to the third round, losing to Maret Ani (Estonia) and Meilen Tu (U.S.) 7-6, 4-6, 4-6

* At the 37th Chess Olympiad 2006 in Turin (ended June 4):

- The top-seeded Russian women's team drew with France (15) 1.5-1.5 in Round 12 and beat India 2-1 in Round 13 to take the silver medal with 28 points. Ukraine (2) won gold with 29.5 points, and China (6) finished third with 27.5 points.

- The Russian men's team, seeded No. 1 for the tournament, beat Cuba (18) 3-1 in Round 12 but lost to Israel (6) 1-3 in Round 13. Russia finished in sixth place with 32 points. Armenia (3) won gold with 36 points, followed by China (12) with 34 points and the United States with 33 points.

* Chekhovskiye Medvedy Chekhov added the national men's handball title to this season's European Cup Winners' Cup trophy by defeating LUKoil-Dinamo Astrakhan 31:24 at home in the second leg of the SuperLeague best-of-three final
