NOVO-OGARYOVO (Moscow Region), June 2 (RIA Novosti)-Russian President Vladimir Putin said Friday his country was against a military operation against Iran under any circumstances.

The five UN Security Council's permanent members and Germany ruled out the use of force against Iran over its controversial nuclear programs at a meeting in Vienna Thursday.

Putin reiterated Russia's position at a briefing Friday and welcomed Washington's decision to join the talks.

"This is an important step," he said. "Our position is well known: we are against the use of force under any circumstances."

Putin also said it would be premature to talk about imposing UN sanctions on the Islamic Republic and detailed talks with the Tehran leadership had to be held.

The president said the UN was still an important organization and had not lost its significance.

"That the UN openly discusses issues and remains a venue for resolving international problems and does not serve the foreign-policy interests of a particular country, not only gives it a greater universality, but also makes it indispensable for working out acceptable international solutions," the Russian president said.
