Below follow the main events in the Russian sports world over the weekend and Monday at 2.p.m. GMT May 29

* At the 37th Chess Olympiad 2006 in Turin (through June 4):

- The Russian men's team, seeded No. 1 for the tournament, lost to Netherlands (8) 1.5-2.5 in Round 6 and beat Belarus 3-1 in Round 7. Russia is in second place with 20 points. Armenia (3) leads with 21 points, and Cuba (18) is third.

- The top-seeded Russian women's team beat Hungary (4) 2-1 in Round 6 and Slovakia (16) in Round 7. Russia is in first place with 17.5 points, followed by Ukraine (2) with 16.5 points, and the U.S (5) with 15.5 points.

* At the 2006 European Judo Championships in Tampere, Finland (ended May 28):

- Ivan Pershin won gold in the men's 90kg category, defeating beating David Alarza (Spain) in the final. Winston Gordon (U.K.) and Roberto Meloni (Italy) took bronze

- Ruslan Gasymov won gold in the men's 100kg category, beating Daniel Hadfi (Hungary) in the final. Peter Cousins (U.K.) and Dimitri Peters (Germany) took bronze

- Vera Moskalyuk won gold in the women's 78kg category, defeating Lebrun Celine (France) in the final. Esther San Miguel (Spain) took bronze

- Salamu Mezhidov won bronze in the men's 73kg category. Elnur Mammadli (Azerbaijan) won gold, defeating Daniel Fernandes (France) in the final.

- Soslan Tmenov won bronze in the men's +100kg category. Andreas Toelzer (Germany) won gold, and silver went to Janusz Wojnarowicz (Poland)

* At the $18.2-mln Roland Garros Grand Slam series tennis tournament in Paris, France (through June 11):

Women's singles:

- Maria Sharapova, seeded No. 4 for the tournament, saved three match points in the ninth game of the third set to defeat unseeded Mashona Washington (U.S.) 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 in the first round

- Dinara Safina (14) advanced to the second round, beating compatriot Vera Zvonaryova 6-3, 7-5

- Vera Dushevina beat compatriot Anastassia Rodionova 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the second round

- Yelena Likhovtseva lost to Karolina Sprem (Croatia) 1-6, 1-6 in the first round

Men's singles:

Mikhail Youzhny advanced to the second round, defeating Sasa Tuksar (Croatia) 6-3, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0

* CSKA Moscow won the national men's basketball title, beating Khimki Moscow Region 81:75 away in the third leg of the SuperLeague best-of-five final.

* UNICS Kazan edged out Dinamo St. Petersburg 101:98 in overtime away in the fourth leg of the Russian men's basketball SuperLeague best-of-five bronze-medal series to tie up the series at 2-2. The fifth leg is set for May 30 in Kazan.
