Govt. commission to view status of Russian diaspora in Baltics

MOSCOW, May 27 (RIA Novosti) - An upcoming session of the government commission on Russian compatriots abroad will focus on the status of Russian ethnic minorities in the Baltic countries, the Foreign Ministry said Saturday.

The commission, which will meet on May 30 under the chairmanship of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, will consider measures to support ethnic Russians in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.

After regaining independence following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Latvia and Estonia did not automatically grant citizenship to residents whose parents or grandparents arrived in the country after what they consider the occupation of 1940. This policy mainly affected ethnic Russians.

Russian communities in Latvia and Estonia complain of discrimination by local authorities, a position that has received support from the Russian authorities on many occasions.

Unlike these former Soviet republics in the Baltics, Lithuania granted citizenship to all its residents without requiring them to learn Lithuanian.

The session will be attended by representatives of the legislative and executive branches, Federation components, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Trade, and the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs.
