DUSHANBE, May 13 (RIA Novosti) - Tajikistan has stepped up security measures on the border with Kyrgyzstan following armed raids on border posts Friday, the Central Asian country's State Frontier Committee said Saturday.

"A reserve group of 100 border guards and a special Defense Ministry battalion have been redeployed onto the 223-km (138-mile) section of the Tajik-Kyrgyz border within 24 hours," said Khushnud Rakhmutullayev, head of the frontier committee's press service.

Checks at the three border posts located on the section have been toughened.

Tajik border guards said two groups of gunmen had attacked Tajik and Kyrgyz checkpoints on the border shared by the countries. One group was destroyed in the early hours of Saturday, but the other escaped, they said.

The enhanced security measures must help track down the remaining gunmen, whose number has not been reported.

Early on Friday, armed people attacked the Lakkan (Lyakkan in Kyrgyz) border post in Tajikistan's northern Isfarin district, killing two border guards, injuring a customs officer, and seizing 19 automatic rifles, a machinegun and cartridges.

The gunmen headed to Kyrgyzstan's Batken region in the south of the Fergana Valley, about 700 kilometers (440 miles) southwest of the capital, Bishkek. They reportedly hijacked a Mercedes Benz, killing the driver, after their Opel overturned.

Along the way to Osh, 100 kilometers (over 62 miles) from the town of Batken, they attacked Kyrgyzstan's Putlon border post, killing one and wounding another border guard.

Kyrgyz border guards said a mobile border post had also been attacked and two locals killed in the ensuing shootout.

The gunmen were located 200 kilometers (124 miles) off Batken Friday night. The operation, involving troops from Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, lasted several hours and was over early on Saturday.

Tajikistan's Interior Ministry said four gunmen had been killed and one arrested. Another militant was killed Friday. The weapons seized by the militants were confiscated.

One Kyrgyz border was killed. A Tajik border guard, injured in the operation, died Friday night.
