Putin appoints new military negotiator for Georgia talks

President Vladimir Putin Tuesday relieved Igor Savolsky of his duties as chief negotiator on military affairs with Georgia, and replaced him with Valery Kanyaikin.

MOSCOW, May 2 (RIA Novosti) - President Vladimir Putin Tuesday relieved Igor Savolsky of his duties as chief negotiator on military affairs with Georgia, and replaced him with Valery Kanyaikin.

Kanyaikin, a Foreign Ministry ambassador at large, takes over as head of the Russian delegation negotiating with Georgia on withdrawal of Russian bases from the country, and also as chairman of a state commission on drafting a Russian-Georgian friendship treaty.

The presidential press service said Savolsky had been relieved of his duties in connection with another appointment.
