- Svetlana Kuznetsova (4) cruised into the second round of the women's singles by defeating Meghann Shaughnessy of the U.S., 6:0, 6:1

- 7th-seeded Russian-U.S. pair Vera Zvonaryova and Dong Tu advanced to the second round of the women's doubles by defeating Czech duo Gabriela Navratilova/Vladimira Uhlirova

* Ak Bars Kazan beat Avangard Omsk 6:1 at home in the first game of the best-of-five SuperLeague hockey championship finals. The remaining legs are set for April 12, 14, 16 (April 18, 20, if necessary). Ak Bars plays the first two legs at home, as it finished higher in the regular season.
