* At the $600,000 WTA tournament in Amelia Island, Florida:

- Top-seed Nadezhda Petrova won the title in women's singles by defeating third seeded Francesca Schiavone of Italy, 6:4, 6:4. Svetlana Kuznetsova (5), who won the Nasdaq-100 Open title in Miami on the previous weekend, had to retire in the semifinal match against Schiavone due to injury

* Nadezhda Petrova jumped five places to fourth in the WTA Tour Race rankings announced Monday by the governing body of women's professional tennis. Three other Russians are ranked in the top 10: Maria Sharapova (2), Svetlana Kuznetsova (5), and Elena Dementieva (7)

* Russian basketball team Khimki Moscow took the silver in the finals of the FIBA EuroCup tournament, losing to Spain's DKV Joventut 63:88. Another Russian team, Dinamo St. Petersburg - last year's FIBA Euroleague winner which Khimki beat in the hard-fought semifinals, 63:61 - lost the bronze-medal match, 81:83, to BC Kiev, the host of the Final Four.

* Russians won 14 medals, including 5 gold, 4 silver, and 5 bronze at the 2006 Judo Super World Cup in Moscow, to take first place in the tournament's unofficial team standings

* Russian swimmers took three golds and four silvers at the 8th FINA World Swimming Championships in Shanghai

* Boxer Yury Romanovich failed to win the IBF Featherweight (126 lbs) title, losing the 10-round fight to defending champion Valdemir Pereira of Brazil
