Big business, Audit Chamber head to consider privatization review

MOSCOW, March 29 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's leading business-friendly association said it would soon invite the head of the Audit Chamber to discuss a possible revision of the country's controversial privatization campaign, the organization's head said Wednesday.

According to Alexander Shokhin, the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (RSPP) - an organization that has in the past been dubbed "an oligarchs' trade union" - will ask Sergei Stepashin, known for his commitment to partial privatization revision, to attend a meeting in the near future.

Shokhin said the main principle in reviewing privatization deals, many of which have been questioned as state assets were sold for a pittance in a rash of transactions after the collapse of the Soviet Union, was very simple.

"If there were any violations in the privatization process and the statute of limitations has not expired, the results can be reviewed," he said. "But if moral and ethnical standards are concerned, then it would be senseless to review the deals."

In his further comments on the current property situation in the country, Shokhin said that the increasing number of hostile takeovers meant the government had to pursue a careful policy in operating assets, and called for the relevant legislation to be amended.
